Circular economy and the carbon credit market – Opportunities for Vietnam’s agriculture and forestry sectors

21.07.2024

On July 19, 2024, the ASEAN Carbon Credit Trading Platform Joint Stock Company (CCTPA), in collaboration with Dalat University and its partner Fairatmos – the first climate technology company in Southeast Asia – successfully organized a seminar titled:
“Implementing Carbon Credit Programs through Agriculture and Forestry Projects with a Circular Economy Approach.”

The seminar aimed to promote the development of a circular economy in the agriculture and forestry sectors through carbon credit projects. This represents a new direction that not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also creates economic opportunities and fosters sustainable development for businesses and farmers.

Agriculture & forestry projects and carbon credits

At the seminar, participants highlighted the importance of carbon credits and sustainable agriculture and forestry management. Registering a carbon credit project is the first step, requiring strict compliance with specific standards and regulations. This process includes verification and assessment of emission reduction activities, ensuring that projects genuinely contribute to climate change mitigation goals.

Mr. Nguyen Vo Truong An, Deputy CEO of CCTPA, shared: “CCTPA will provide comprehensive guidance for businesses and organizations in Vietnam on how to develop carbon credit projects, including registration procedures, validation and verification processes, as well as mechanisms for carbon credit trading and offsetting, and the application of carbon taxes at both regional and global levels. Based on emission reduction targets, CCTPA will also advise on specific solutions such as the use of renewable energy, optimization of production processes, and the deployment of clean technologies that do not generate carbon emissions.”

Mr. Truong An – Vice General Director of CCTPA delivering remarks

Mr. Win Sim Tan, Regional Representative of Verra for East and Southeast Asia, emphasized:
“AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) plays a critical role in reducing carbon emissions and protecting biodiversity. Through AFOLU projects, we can promote sustainable land use and mangrove conservation, while improving agricultural productivity and preventing land degradation.”

In Vietnam, CCTPA is currently the first and official partner of Verra in implementing carbon credit projects and climate action programs.

Technology applications in carbon credit projects

During the seminar, experts from Fairatmos – CCTPA’s exclusive partner in Vietnam – demonstrated advanced technologies applied in agriculture and forestry carbon credit projects. These include the use of AI to assess project potential based on satellite data, enabling accurate evaluation of carbon storage capacity, methodologies, and financial viability, as well as generating detailed reports on project design and costs.

Project developers now have the opportunity to be supported by CCTPA and Fairatmos throughout the entire lifecycle, from pre-feasibility to carbon credit issuance and transfer, fully managed and reported on a digital platform. This is particularly significant as it allows project owners to effectively track project development and registration processes, not only in terms of information transparency but also cost optimization.

In practical terms, this includes investment analysis reports and project development cost assessments, helping demonstrate project value to potential investors. In other words, this technical platform helps address one of the biggest concerns for project developers – investment cash flow, often considered the primary barrier during the project design phase.

Circular economy approach in agriculture & forestry

The circular economy in agriculture and forestry focuses on optimizing resource use and minimizing environmental impacts. It promotes waste reuse and recycling, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and protects ecosystems.

Implementing this approach enhances production efficiency, reduces costs, and drives sustainable development. At the same time, it creates new job opportunities and strengthens the competitiveness of the agriculture and forestry sectors.

Participants at the seminar agreed that applying carbon credits in agriculture and forestry not only helps reduce emissions but also brings substantial economic and environmental benefits. In particular, the circular economy approach optimizes resource utilization and minimizes waste, creating a more sustainable and efficient system.

The seminar concluded successfully, opening up new opportunities and pathways for the agriculture and forestry sectors in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The event also marked an important milestone in promoting circular economy development and greenhouse gas emission reduction through carbon credit projects. Notably, this was the first in-depth discussion on agriculture and forestry carbon credits in Vietnam and in the Lam Vien Plateau region.
